Boys U11 Team Reports

MATCH REPORT:

Gloucestershire U11 squash team have concluded a highly successful year by winning the annual Under 11 team tournament held in Manchester for the fourth year in succession. Following wins in both the South West league and the Five Counties annual competitions during the 2006/07 season, the Gloucestershire boys travelled to Manchester to defend their title. This year the competition was extremely tough with Derbyshire and Yorkshire fielding strong teams. All players fought very hard over the week-end in the knowledge that every point counted in the event of a tie - and in the end this was to be crucial when a tie occurred between Derbyshire and Gloucestershire. On count-back of points won, Gloucestershire were the successors. The team consisted of Matthew Bedwell, Callum Davidson, Jacob Lake, Alex Stanghellini and Ewen Howard.

In addition to the team event, for the first time an individual event was run. The players were split into two separate competitions, the top seeded players in one group and the lower seeded players in another. The Gloucestershire players were again successful. Given that players had to be under the age of 11 in September last year, Matthew, Callum and Ewan were still the younger players in the competition having not yet reached their eleventh birthdays. In the top seeded group Matthew Bedwell was runner up losing to Russell Clarke of Derbyshire, Callum Davidson was 3rd and Jacob Lake 7th. In the other group Alex Stanghellini came runner up, and Ewen Howard 9th. Congratulations to all of the boys for their well-deserved success.
